Preventing tea losses in transportation

How Kain Globe launched Sri Lanka’s first online video monitoring system for vehicles, deployed to prevent tea smuggling in transit.

The situation

Tea moves from estate to factory to auction in stages, often on hired vehicles and often at night. Losses in transit are difficult to attribute after the fact: GPS shows where a vehicle went, but not what happened at a stop.

What we did

In 2017 Kain Globe launched Sri Lanka’s first online video monitoring system for vehicles, specifically to prevent tea smuggling. Live video is paired with location, so a stop can be reviewed rather than inferred.

What was applied

  • Online video monitoring for vehicles
  • Real-time GPS tracking of location, route and speed
  • Geo-fence module, so an unplanned stop raises an alert
  • Notification management and reporting for review after the fact
